Blackjack

Thank you for staying on our site and welcome to one more online casino game! Blackjack steadily marches through the centuries. Back in the 17th century the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes (most famous for “Don Quixote”), who was a gambler, wrote a tale about a couple of cheats working in Seville. In this tale he described a very similar card game. And in the 21st century in the very popular animated science fiction sitcom “Futurama” one of the main characters Bender (a heavy-drinking and cigar-smoking, egocentric robot) in a number of scenes exclaims: “I’m gonna go and build my own theme park with blackjack and hookers!” This quite expressive phrase (with the variation “Loona Park” instead of “theme park”) has become an Internet meme.

So, what is blackjack and how to play it? As for the origin, Blackjack’s precursor was twenty-one, a game of unknown origin. When twenty-one was introduced in the United States, gambling houses offered bonus payouts to stimulate players’ interest. One such bonus was a ten-to-one payout if the player’s hand consisted of the ace of spades and a black jack (either the jack of clubs or the jack of spades). This hand was called a “blackjack”, and the name stuck to the game even though this special bonus was soon withdrawn. In the modern game, a blackjack refers to any hand of an ace plus a ten or face card regardless of suits or colours.

But let me tell the story first things first.
Blackjack is a comparing card game between a player and dealer, meaning players compete against the dealer but not against other players. It is played with one or more decks of 52 cards. The object of the game is to beat the dealer in one of the following ways: either get 21 points on the player’s first two cards (called a blackjack), without a dealer blackjack; or reach a final score higher than the dealer without exceeding 21; or let the dealer draw additional cards until his or her hand exceeds 21.

There are also some special terminology and slang. For example, “getting a hit” means taking an additional card after receiving the first two cards. Scoring higher than 21 is called “busting” or “going bust”. The hand is called “soft” if a player holds an ace valued as 11 and therefore cannot go bust by taking an additional card because 11 plus the value of any other card will always be less than or equal to 21. Otherwise, the hand is “hard”. If the player and dealer have the same total, this is called a “push”. However, the key concepts in Blackjack are the following: hand – a collection of cards held by a dealer or a player; tracking – following the profile of cards that have been dealt; shuffle – a procedure used to randomize a deck of playing cards; shoes – a special device from which the cards are dealt; chip – a casino token.

Unlike roulette or lottery, winning in Blackjack is not just a matter of chance, but mostly a matter of the player’s IQ and skills. Various mathematical strategies may be applied here. That’s why Blackjack has become a high-profile target of advantage players, particularly card counters. They track the profile of cards that have been dealt and adapt their wages and playing strategies accordingly. Such card counters can cause big financial losses, so some casinos’ security officers try to reveal them and forbid their access to the casino, in case local laws allow that.

And now transfer the above described into the virtual world, and you will get a real Blackjack but online. Certainly, you should try free games first until you become an advantage player. So, good luck to you both in playing and in developing your intelligence and skills!
